Several increases in operating cost inputs commenced from 1 July 2024.
Award Rates of Pay & Allowances:
The National Minimum Wage and minimum award wages have increased by 3.75%. The increase applies from the first pay period starting on or after 1 July 2024.
The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has published Pay Guides for modern Awards. Copies of the Pay Guides for the most relevant Awards in the container transport logistics sector can be downloaded from the links below:
Road Transport & Distribution Award
Road Transport (Long Distance Operations) Award
These Pay Guides are useful in cross-checking Award rates of pay and relevant allowances for classes of worker under the Awards.
The FWO website also provides a useful Pay and Conditions Tool (P.A.C.T) to assist in calculating correct Award payments (pay and allowances).
Fair Work Information Statement:
The FWO has also updated the Fair Work Information Statement in response to the minimum award wage decision.
Employers must give every new employee a copy of the Fair Work Information Statement (FWIS) before, or as soon as possible after, they start their new job.
Employers must also give every new casual employee a copy of the Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS) at the same time.
When an employee enters a new fixed term contract, they must also be given a copy of the Fixed Term Contract Information Statement (FTCIS).
Read more about these requirements and download a copy of the Fair Work Information Statement (FWIS) at: https://www.fairwork.gov.au/employment-conditions/information-statements/fair-work-information-statement
Road User Charge (RUC) / Fuel Tax Credits:
The Road User Charge (RUC) on diesel used in heavy vehicles to travel on public roads has increased from 1 July 2024 from 28.8 to 30.5 cents per litre, or six per cent.
As a result, the on-road Fuel Tax Credit rate for eligible heavy vehicles will decrease.
Based on fuel costs being approx. 22% to 25% of heavy vehicle operating costs, this 6% increase in the RUC equates to approx. a one percent increase in any Fuel Levy applied by transport operators.
The road user charge will increase another six per cent on 1 July 2025.
